Chiropractic Proof

For over 100 years, chiropractic has produced significant results with a wide variety of health complaints. Millions of patients, from newborns and adolescents, to adults and seniors have benefited from this safe, conservative form of health care.

This success has attracted the attention of more and more researchers who want to better understand the role of chiropractic in improving health. This information has been prepared to help interpret some of the many research projects from around the world, that have positive chiropractic implications.

Because chiropractic care centers around the role of the nervous system, in the future, watch for research findings in the areas of aging, genetics, and immune system response.

The AHCPR Findings

The results published in 1994 by the United States Agency for Health Care Policy Research, reviewed the many treatments for acute low back pain in adults. The panel consisted of medical doctors, osteopaths, nurses, physical therapists, and others familiar with the treatment of low back pain. The results of their five-year study concluded that relief “can be accomplished most safely with nonprescription medication and/or spinal manipulation.”

What Works & What Doesn’t

The panel screened over one hundred published studies relating to spinal manipulation. Using the criteria of symptomatic and functional improvement, the researchers concluded that spinal manipulation is helpful for patients with acute low back pain.

After reviewing the many treatments for low back pain, the panel recommended spinal manipulation.
Perhaps more significant were treatments found to be ineffective and of unproven value. The panel found no evidence of benefit from physical therapy, massage, traction, ultra-sound, laser treatment, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, or biofeedback techniques.

More invasive procedures were dismissed as well. There was little evidence to support the use of injections, muscle relaxers, steroids, acupuncture, or early surgical intervention. The panel found that even prolonged bed rest (more than 4 days), should be avoided.

Upon review of countless controlled randomized clinical trials, the panel concluded that restoration of spinal biomechanics, using methods like those used by chiropractic doctors, to be helpful and highly recommended.

The Manga Report

In 1993, the Ontario Ministry of Health funded a Canadian research project to study if chiropractic could help lower the costs of work-related injuries or improve the rehabilitation of disabled or injured workers.

This study specifically explored the effectiveness of chiropractic management of low back pain. Based on a historical review of the most significant clinical studies, the panel of researchers concluded that the approaches employed by chiropractic doctors were more effective than traditional forms of treatment. In fact, they found the most commonly used medical treatments have questionable value.

Very Persuasive Evidence

Besides revealing that chiropractic patients were able to return to work more quickly than those who received traditional treatment, chiropractic patients reported a high level of satisfaction with their care.

One of the most persuasive findings was the issue of safety. The study concluded that chiropractic care is safer than medical management of low back pain.

Based on the evidence, the researchers recommended that chiropractic services be fully covered under the Ontario Health Insurance Plan. Further, they concluded that chiropractic doctors should be engaged at the highest levels to assess policy and review standards and care recommendations for workers with back injuries.

The Virginia Assessment

Photo.
Chiropractic Care was shown to help avoid or reduce the incidence of other more expensive forms of treatment.
This 1992 study was conducted to determine the value of including chiropractic in Virginia’s mandated health care coverage. The research was conducted by a professor of economics and preventive medicine. Because chiropractic care could help avoid more costly types of treatment, it was concluded that mandating chiropractic coverage could actually reduce costs.

Chiropractic Compared Favorably

The researchers conducted a thorough investigation between chiropractic and traditional medical treatment. While their primary focus was on the costs associated with including chiropractic coverage, they explored safety issues, efficacy, wage loss, and treatment frequency. Before reaching their conclusions they reviewed 35 different comparisons.

A concern explored in their research was whether expanding coverage to include chiropractic would increase costs to the state. This concern seemed to unfounded.

The evidence they present shows that chiropractic care provides substantial benefits at a relatively low cost. They concluded that adding chiropractic benefits would have a very small impact on health insurance expenditures and might actually lower overall health care costs.

The British Study

A three year British study involved 741 patients. Roughly half received traditional medical treatment and the other half received chiropractic care. The 1990 report observed that patients seen by chiropractic doctors were significantly better within six months and remained so during the two year follow-up period. This, and other evidence, led researchers to conclude that chiropractic care compares more favorably than traditional outpatient hospital treatment.

Long Term Results

Published in the prestigious British Medical Journal, this study is especially important due to its size and independent nature. Besides revealing the effectiveness of chiropractic in the short-term, the lasting effect of treatment two and three years later was significant.

Researchers used the Oswestry Pain Disability Questionnaire and the results of objective range of motion testing to confirm their findings. The patients progress was measured by their ability to walk, lift, sit, and conduct their lives. Not only did the chiropractic patients experience better results for a longer period of time, they missed less time from work.

Based upon patients consulting chiropractic doctors instead of receiving hospital treatment, the researchers concluded that reduced absenteeism could save millions in lost production each year. Because of its effectiveness and long-term benefits, they recommended that including chiropractic in the British National Health Service should be considered.

Skeptical About Chiropractic

Chiropractic doesn’t add anything. And chiropractic doesn’t take anything away. It honors the wisdom of your body and your inborn potential to be healthy. It is this difference that has helped millions and produced high levels of patient satisfaction.

Ask questions. Discover the simple truth about today’s contemporary chiropractic care. And then make the natural choice.

Photo of skeptic woman. “I don’t believe in chiropractic” photo of skeptic man. “I’ve heard chiropractic wears out your joints.” skeptic child “Is chiropractic care safe?”

While chiropractic is different, it certainly isn’t something that you have to “believe in” for it to work.

Instead, chiropractic results are produced by adhering to scientifically confirmed facts:

The nervous system controls every cell of your body. Nerve impulses flow from the brain, down the spinal cord, and to every organ and tissue. Impulses sent back to the brain confirm that the body is working as it should.

The moving bones of the spine can interfere with this exchange by irritating adjacent nerves.

Ill health can result from distorted or compromised nervous system control of the body. Chiropractic care helps restore the integrity of the nervous system by reducing interferences caused by the spine.

Chiropractic care can help prevent joints from wearing out!

Bones don’t “rub” on each other. Instead, each joint is enclosed in a “capsule” of fluid that should offer a lifetime of friction-free movement. When there is a loss of proper motion or position of spinal bones, this movement can be restricted. Spinal joints above or below attempt to make up the difference by moving too much.

Obviously, areas of too much movement are left to stabilize during the healing process. Instead, chiropractic spinal adjustments are directed only to those areas that are “stuck” and not moving enough.

Critics mislead by suggesting that adjustments to the neck can subject patients to unnatural stress or compromise blood supply to the brain. But if the spine were that fragile, people would fear bending over to tie their shoe laces or looking up to enjoy an evening sunset!

Thousands will die this year from anesthesia or needless back surgeries. Thousands more will perish from common aspirin or destroy their kidneys from so-called “safe” pain medicines. Adverse reactions to prescription medication are the fourth leading cause of death in the United States.

Meanwhile, the rare complications from chiropractic care can be counted on one hand!

skeptic woman. “Aren’t chiropractic results just a ‘Placebo Effect?’” skeptic man “If you start do you have to go for the rest of your life?”

This is a convenient claim made by critics who have chosen to overlook convincing proof to the contrary.

The placebo effect depends on the power of suggestion. Yet chiropractic results have been enjoyed by newborns, infants, pets that have been hit by cars, and others for whom the power of suggestion isn’t possible!

Plus, there are alterations to a patient’s spine from chiropractic care. Many see dramatic changes when they compare X-ray views taken before and after a period of care. Other tests show improved range of motion and flexibility.

There’s no question that the power of suggestion can be an important ally in the healing process. However, it can’t begin to explain the millions of patients who have been helped with chiropractic care.

How long you decide to benefit from chiropractic care is always up to you. Since many spinal problems get started from traumatic births, accidents, or other long-standing problems, permanent correction can be difficult. Years of muscle damage, scar tissue, and ligamental instability can set the stage for a relapse. Some patients find a program of supportive care (like regularly brushing your teeth) to be helpful.

After enjoying initial relief, many patients choose to continue with periodic checkups.

Decide for yourself whether you want Initial Intensive Care for temporary relief, Rehabilitative Care to stabilize and strengthen the spine, or Wellness Care for non-symptomatic elective care.

· Do I Have A Pinched Nerve?

Many patients consult a chiropractic doctor because they think they have a pinched nerve.

Because of the way your spine is designed, abnormal spinal function caused from physical trauma, emotional tensions, or chemical toxins can affect the delicate tissues of the spinal cord and nerve roots.

While commonly associated with the spine, the pinched nerve (compressive lesion) is actually rare. Researchers suggest that only 10% to 15% of spine related problems are caused by direct pressure of bone on nerve tissue! This can result in numbness, burning, or a “pins and needles” feeling.

More frequently, nerves are irritated (facilitative lesion). This is caused when nerve tissue is rubbed, scraped, stretched by a loss of spinal curve, or irritated by malfunctioning spinal joints.

· Do I Have A Slipped Disc?

Technically, a disc can’t “slip.”

The intervertebral disc is a pad of cartilage-type material situated between spinal bones. Each disc serves as a connector, spacer, and shock absorber for the spine. A soft, jelly like center is contained by outer layers of fibrous tissue. Healthy discs help allow normal turning and bending.

Because of the way each disc is attached to the vertebrae above and below, a disc cannot “slip.” However, trauma or injury to the spine can cause discs to tear, bulge, herniate, or worse, rupture. This can be quite painful, as the soft center of the disc leaks, putting pressure on the adjacent nerve roots and spinal cord.

While results cannot be guaranteed, many patients have avoided needless surgery or a dependency on pain pills, by choosing chiropractic care for their disc-related health problem.

· What Is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is based on the scientific fact that your body is a self-regulating, self-healing organism. These important functions are controlled by the brain, spinal cord, and all the nerves of the body.

The skull protects the delicate tissues of the brain. The moving bones of the spine protect the vulnerable communication pathways of the spinal cord and nerve roots. If the nervous system is impaired, it can cause malfunction of the tissues and organs throughout the body. Doctors call this the Vertebral Subluxation Complex. Vertebral, meaning the bones of the spine. Subluxation, meaning less than a total dislocation. And Complex, meaning consisting of more than one part.

Chiropractic is the science of locating offending spinal structures, the art of reducing their impact to the nervous system, and the philosophy of all things natural.

· How Does Chiropractic Work?

Chiropractic works by restoring your own inborn ability to be healthy. When under the proper control of your nervous system, all the cells, tissues, and organs of your body are designed to resist disease and ill health. The chiropractic approach to better health is to locate and help remove interferences to your natural state of being healthy.

A common interference to the nervous system is the 24 moving bones of the spinal column. A loss of normal motion or position of these bones can irritate or impair the function of the nervous system. This can disrupt the transmission of controlling nerve impulses.

With improved spinal function there is often improved nervous system function. Your chiropractic doctor can help remove interferences that may be impairing normal health.

Since the primary focus of your care is improved nervous system function, chiropractic can have a positive effect on many health conditions not normally thought of as “back” problems.

· What Do Chiropractic Doctors Do?

Helping to restore proper spinal biomechanics and improved nervous system function begins with a case history. This gives the doctor a background about your health, such as surgeries, accidents, the onset of your condition, and other details affecting your current health.

After reviewing your history and discussing your specific problem, a thorough orthopedic, neurological, and chiropractic examination is performed. X-rays may be taken to uncover structural and functional problems associated with the spinal column. These examinations help identify areas of spinal malfunction and resulting nervous system deficit.

The findings of these examinations are explained and a plan of chiropractic adjustments may be recommended. Progress is monitored with periodic examinations and follow-up reports.

Since the word “doctor” comes from the Latin word meaning teacher, regardless of your doctor’s unique clinical approach, he or she has a strong commitment to patient education.

· What Type of Education Do Chiropractic Doctors Get?

Today’s Doctor of Chiropractic is well educated.

The science of chiropractic requires a special emphasis on anatomy, physiology, pathology, neurology, biomechanics, X-ray, spinal adjusting techniques, and related subjects. This demanding curriculum prepares chiropractic doctors to locate the Vertebral Subluxation Complex and help correct the resulting nervous system dysfunction.

To graduate with a Doctor of Chiropractic degree, each candidate passes the demanding National Board Examination. Then, doctors apply to a governmental or professional licensing board and pass a still more difficult test before being granted the privilege to practice.

A chiropractic education never ends. Most doctors complete postgraduate instruction for license renewal and to stay current on the latest scientific research.

· What Is An Adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment is the art of using a specific force in a precise direction, applied to a joint that is fixated, “locked up”, or not moving properly. This adds motion to the joint, helping the bones gradually return to a more normal position and motion. The purpose of this safe and natural procedure is improved spinal function, improved nervous system function, and improved health.

There are many ways to adjust the spine.

Usually the doctor’s hands or a specially designed instrument delivers a brief and highly-accurate thrust. Some adjusting methods are quick, whereas others require a slow and constant pressure.

After years of training and clinical experience, each chiropractic doctor becomes highly skilled in the delivery of a variety of adjusting approaches.

· Are All Patients Adjusted The Same Way?

The doctor evaluates each patient’s unique spinal problem and develops an individual course of care. The resulting recommendations are based upon years of training and experience.

Some patients who complain of headaches, may actually have a lower back problem that is causing a compensation reaction at the base of the skull. Other patients may be experiencing numbness and tingling in their fingers, when the actual problem is in the neck. Every patient presents a uniquely different spinal pattern.

Patients notice that their chiropractic care is delivered with confidence and precision. Each visit builds on the one before. And while visits may seem similar, each patient’s care is uniquely different from every other patient.

· Can I Adjust Myself?

Since a chiropractic adjustment is a specific force, applied in a specific direction, to a specific spinal joint, it is virtually impossible to adjust oneself.

It is possible to turn or bend or twist in certain ways to create a “popping” sound, like the sound that sometimes accompanies a chiropractic adjustment. Unfortunately, this type of joint manipulation is usually counterproductive, often making an already unstable area of the spine even more unsteady. Adjusting the spine is not for amateurs!

The best way to enjoy the healthful benefits of chiropractic is to receive adjustments from a Doctor of Chiropractic. Even your doctor must seek out the services of another colleague to help restore and maintain proper spinal function.

· Is Chiropractic Care Safe?

In the words of the New Zealand government’s inquiry, chiropractic care is “remarkably safe.”

Chiropractic has an excellent safety record. It is the result of a conservative approach to health that avoids invasive procedures or addictive drugs.

A thorough case history and examination help reveal areas of the spine that may be causing nervous system malfunction. This information will be used to determine the best course of care for each patient.

Chiropractic care is a natural approach to better health that is proven safe and effective.

· Can I Speed The Healing Process?

While there aren’t any shortcuts to speed your body’s natural healing process, there’s a lot you can do to give yourself the best chance of a quick recovery.

Learn proper sitting and lifting methods. Specific exercises may be suggested to help retrain the muscles that support the spine.

Proper rest is an important aspect of the healing process, too. Get the appropriate amount of rest your body needs and avoid sleeping on your stomach.

During the healing process, proper nutrition is more important than ever. Make sure you eat balanced meals, and if you’re overweight, now would be a good time to slim down and reduce unnecessary stresses to your spine.

Perhaps most important of all, keep your appointments and follow your chiropractic doctor’s recommendations for optimum results.

· Why Do Children Need Chiropractic Care?

Since significant spinal trauma can occur at birth, many parents have their newborns checked for the Vertebral Subluxation Complex.

Later, learning to walk, ride a bicycle, and other childhood activities can cause spinal problems. While a bandage and some comforting words can help a skinned knee, the unseen damage to the child’s spine is the unique domain of a chiropractic doctor.

Many childhood health complaints that are brushed off as “growing pains” can often be traced to the spine. Regular chiropractic checkups can identify these problems and help avoid many of the health complaints seen later in adults.

Naturally, chiropractic adjusting procedures are modified to a child’s spine. Most parents report that their children enjoy their chiropractic adjustments and seem healthier than other children.

· Am I Too Old For Chiropractic Care?

More and more people are consulting chiropractic doctors, especially in their later years. With growing concerns about over-medication and the side effects of combining various prescription drugs, safe, natural chiropractic care is growing in popularity.

Restoring better spinal function can help improve mobility, vitality, endurance, and appetite. Many patients report improvement with arthritic symptoms and other chronic ailments often associated with the aging process.

The adjusting technique used by your doctor will be modified for maximum comfort and results.

As we get older and wiser, the simplicity and effectiveness of chiropractic care becomes more and more obvious.

· How Long Will I Need Chiropractic Care?

Spinal problems, neglected since early childhood, may require ongoing supportive care for optimum spinal function. These long-standing problems are often associated with muscle weakness, soft tissue damage, and degenerative changes to the spine.

Most patients find that periodic chiropractic checkups help keep them in tip-top shape. Those who are active, have stressful jobs, or want to be their very best, find that a schedule of preventive visits are helpful in the maintenance of good health.

Some patients seek chiropractic care only when their ache or pain becomes unbearable. While this style of “crisis management” is usually more costly and time-consuming, our office stands ready to help all patients, regardless of their health goals.

How long you decide to benefit from chiropractic care is always up to you.

Ask Your Chiropractic Doctor.

Our office is committed to patient education. In numerous studies, patients who fully understand their condition and their doctor’s recommendations, get well faster. Find out ways you can speed your recovery and enhance the healing process. Join the millions who enjoy better health through safe and effective chiropractic care.

The Truth About Chiropractic

    Photo of man.
Real Health

The key to real health is to have every organ, tissue, and system of your body functioning exactly as it was designed.

Health has nothing to do with how you feel, your temperature, or whether symptoms are present. Those who die of heart attacks, cancer, or dozens of other health problems suffer ill health long before their first symptom!

Real health allows us to adapt to the environment, cooling us when we’re hot, fighting a virus, healing a cut, digesting our food, and millions of other vital activities. When there is interference to this complex orchestra of controlling nerve impulses, the resulting symptoms are simply warning signs that things are not right.

The chiropractic approach to real health is to locate any part of the nervous system that has lost proper control of the organs and tissues of your body.

A common culprit is when the moving bones of the spinal column choke or irritate the spinal cord or nerve roots. Locating, reducing, and preventing these “Vertebral Subluxations” is the primary interest of your Doctor of Chiropractic.

Real health is not how you feel; it’s how you function!

How Well Does Your Body Work?

If you lose your car keys, simply retrace your steps and you’ll likely find them. Lose your health and finding it can be just as easy — if you know where to look.

The Germ Theory

Germs no more cause disease than cars cause automobile accidents.

The viruses and bacteria we call germs are everywhere. They’re in the food we eat, the air we breathe, and the water we drink. They can only result in disease when our bodies provide a hospitable environment for them to reproduce.

For example, let’s say you inhale some tuberculosis germs. Just because these germs are present does not mean you’ll get tuberculosis. It depends upon many factors, such as the health of your lungs, the function of your immune system, and your overall health.

The nervous system controls the proper function (health) of your lungs and all the other tissues and organs of your body. That’s why your chiropractic doctor is so keenly interested in the integrity of your nervous system. Since the controlling nerve impulses travel through the spinal column, chiropractic care can have an affect on many aspects of health besides back and neck pain.

If the presence of germs automatically caused disease, you would have a constant head cold and suffer from a chronic case of the flu!

Do You Believe?

Germs are everywhere. The “germ theory” that most people use to explain disease, is a carry-over from the early 1800s. These microscopic organisms are one of the most misunderstood aspects of health. Do you still believe in germs?

Innate Intelligence

You have a special “intelligence” that knows to beat your heart, digest your food, ward of infections, heal a cut, and help you adapt to the environment.

Doctors of Chiropractic refer to this vital life force as innate intelligence.

Fortunately it requires no conscious thought. It has nothing to do with being “smart” and it works perfectly – unless there is some type of interference.

Your nervous system, consisting of your brain, spinal cord, and all the nerves of your body help control your innate “life expression.” This intricate web of delicate nerves is in touch with every cell, tissue, organ, and system of your body. Any disruption, irritation, or change in the ability of your nervous system to orchestrate the functions of your body can set the stage for disease and ill health.

One of the most common nervous system disruptions is the Vertebral Subluxation.

When bones of the spinal column lose their normal motion or position, they can rub, choke, or irritate the spinal cord and nerve roots. This is why your chiropractic doctor is interested in innate intelligence.

Removing interferences to the function of your nervous system allows your body’s inborn healing ability to do its job.

A Special Intelligence

Inside the trillions of cells of your body is a “special something” found only in things that are alive. The great thinkers have been fascinated by this special something. What separates living tissue like you, from ice cream cones, automobiles, or granite statues?

Chiropractic is a unique healing discipline. Its success with a variety of health problems is the result of a focus on the relationship between the nervous system and the spinal column. The effectiveness, safety, and simplicity of this approach to relief and wellness, make chiropractic the most popular form of natural health care.

Even so-called “natural” birthing methods can stress a still-developing spine.

The resulting irritation to the nervous system can be the cause of many newborn health complaints. Colic, unexplained crying, poor appetite, breathing problems, and allergic reactions can often be traced to nervous system dysfunction caused by a malfunctioning spine.

Head support, followed by crawling, and a baby’s first few steps should be followed by chiropractic checkups. If neglected, the bumps and falls during this period of rapid growth may lead to serious spinal deformities later in life. This can set the stage for scoliosis, “growing pains,” and a weakened immune system response.

Chiropractic adjusting techniques are modified to fit a child’s size, weight, and unique spinal problem. Parents often report that their children seem healthier than other kids their age.

Many spinal problems seen in adults begin in childhood. Proper spinal hygiene is an important key to better health. Do you know a child who could benefit from chiropractic care?

Health begins before birth.

Children benefit from chiropractic care before they are born, by having a mother who recieves prenatal chiropractic checkups. A healthy diet, proper exercise, a stress-free environment, and a chiropractic lifestyle help prepare for a happy, healthy baby.

This period of rapid development, hormonal changes, the laxity of connective ligaments, and shifting of weight-bearing structures, may cause many pregnant women to experience low back pain.

Chiropractic care can be quite helpful.

Pregnancy.

Modified approaches can make chiropractic adjustments for pregnant moms easy and comfotable.

Besides helping to relieve the discomfort many expectant mothers experience, chiropractic care helps normalize nervous system function. This is an important component of overall good health.

The benefits of chiropractic care may also be noticed during delivery. Many chiropractic patients report that their deliveries were faster and more comfortable than delivers previous to chiropractic care!

Your Doctor of Chiropractic will take special precautions with you during your pregnancy.

Modifications to the table or adjusting techniques are made during each stage of pregnancy. Pamper yourself and your baby with regular chiropractic checkups.

Women who give up smoking, eat healthy foods, and avoid alcohol during pregnancies are to be congratulated. Those receiving prenatal chiropractic checkups, demonstrate even more concern for their still developing babies.

Chiropractic Scientific Research

How and why does ...

…chiropractic work so well?

A three-year British study compared traditional approaches to back pain, with chiropractic. Their published accounts in 1990 looked into the long term effects of chiropractic care. They concluded that even after several years, chiropractic was more effective than care provided by medical clinics.

In 1987, West German researchers Gutmann and Frymann published their study of 1250 five-day-old babies. They found 211 were suffering from vomiting, hyperactivity, and sleeplessness.

Examination of their cervical spines revealed 95% had muscle strain. Using chiropractic techniques to reduce the tension “frequently resulted in immediate quieting, cessation of crying, muscular relaxation and sleepiness.”

A study by the state of Florida in 1988 showed a 50% reduction in worker’s compensation costs and lost work time when chiropractic care was used instead of traditional medical treatment.

Ask the 316 parents of a 1989 Danish study of infants with colic, if chiropractic is scientific! Chiropractic care helped 84% of the cases. The report concluded that “spinal manipulation of the vertebral column in infants with infantile colic, constitutes an effective treatment of the condition.”

New Zealand government investigation into chiropractic care found it “remarkably safe”.

In 1992, the RAND Corporation studied various types of low back treatments and released their findings at the meeting of the Society of Orthopedic Surgeons.

A University of Washington study revealed that as many as 50% of all back surgeries are unnecessary or ineffective!

A 1972 Oregon Worker’s Compensation study revealed that injured workers who received chiropractic care recovered twice as fast as traditional medical approaches.

Chiropractic works.

Study after study confirms the success of chiropractic for many types of health complaints. Because chiropractic doctors help restore nervous system function, watch for research findings in the areas of aging, genetics, and immune system response.

Is Chiropractic Safe?

  How safe is chiropractic? How...

…do you define safe?

Even with clear warnings in the media and sun screening products, 6,000 people will die this year from skin cancer. Chiropractic care is much safer than getting a so-called “healthy” tan.

Many people take aspirin, ibuprofen, muscle relaxers, and other pain relief drugs. Besides covering up the symptoms and ignoring the underlying causes, 4,000 people will die this year from reactions to medically-prescribed drugs. Chiropractic care is much safer than drug therapy.

Photo.
While commercial airplane mishaps get a lot of publicity, estimates suggest that fewer than 300 people will die this year from flying on commercial aircraft. Chiropractic is much safer than flying.
Chiropractic is safer...
Every year, about 100 people get struck by lightning. Chiropractic is safer than being caught in a thunderstorm. You are more likely to get hit by lightning than to have a negative reaction to a chiropractic adjustment.

In fact, of the millions of patients who will benefit from chiropractic care this year, only a handful will have a newsworthy experience.

Is chiropractic care safe? Yes! Especially when compared with other forms of treatment.

Chiropractic Education

   Natural Healing.
Photo.

Doctors in classrooom.

After the required pre-med undergraduate studies, today’s Doctor of Chiropractic completes an additional four-year program at a chiropractic college.
Chiropractic doctors take a natural approach to health. Their education places special emphasis on anatomy, physiology, pathology, neurology, biomechanics, X-ray, spinal adjusting techniques, and related subjects. This demanding curriculum prepares chiropractic doctors to locate and help correct nervous system dysfunction that can cause disease and ill health.

Before graduation, there is a closely supervised internship at the chiropractic college clinic. This gives doctors valuable hands-on experience with actual patients.

Before beginning practice, your doctor passed rigorous National Board Examinations. Then he or she applied to the licensing board and passed an even more difficult test, before being granted the privilege to practice.

A chiropractic education never ends.
Most doctors complete many hours of post-graduate instruction for their annual license renewal. Virtually every doctor attends seminars, scientific symposia, and reads professional journals to keep up with the latest research.

Your doctor is well-equipped with the education, skills, and clinical experience needed to detect, reduce, and help prevent the Vertebral Subluxation Complex. Which chiropractic college did your doctor attend?

Phases of Chiropractic Care

Which type of care fits your goals?
Obvious symptoms “reporting some relief” “feeling better” “symptoms gone” “feeling great” pre-complaint status “enjoying optimum health” prevention and maintenance
chart.
joint instability and nervous system disfunction inflammation reducing increasing range of motion improving function soft tissue reconstruction muscles and ligaments strengthening spinal stabilization optimum function

Most patients start with initial intensive care. The first thing most new patients want is to feel better. So, in the beginning, visits are usually frequent. Your chiropractic adjustments may be combined with other procedures to help relieve your symptoms. Depending upon your age, condition, and lifestyle, repeated visits over weeks or months may be needed to reduce your symptoms.

With your ache or pain reduced, the goal of Rehabilitative Care is for more complete healing to occur. Underlying muscle and soft tissue damage can remain, even after you feel better. At this stage, visit frequency is often reduced.

You may be urged to supplement your care with exercises, dietary changes, or other self-care procedures. Without complete healing, discontinuing care now can set the stage for a relapse.

After the recovery of your original problem, regular chiropractic “checkups” can help preserve your progress. Periodic visits can help catch little problems before they become major concerns. Wellness-minded adults and their children choose this type of care to look and feel their best. Like other preventive measures, a chiropractic lifestyle can save time and money by helping you stay well.

Do you want to be very...

…best?

A wellness approach to better health means adopting a variety of healthy habits for optimum function on all levels-physical, mental, social, and spiritual.

Photo.
Because of its focus on the nervous system, chiropractic care can be an important part of a wellness lifestyle. The nervous system controls the function of virtually every aspect of our lives. So, maintaining a properly functioning nervous system is essential if you want to be your very best.

Few things as complicated as your body can be “fixed” and then ignored. That’s why your chiropractic doctor will recommend a schedule of regular chiropractic checkups. Like maintaining your teeth, your car, your family, or your faith, maintaining the integrity of your nervous system requires an ongoing investment.

Those who want the very best, add regular chiropractic care to their other health practices. The pleasant result is often more vitality, endurance, and the capacity to enjoy life to its fullest.

Beyond merely feeling better or preventing health problems, we want to fully enjoy life by being at our very best mentally, physically, and socially. True health is only possible with an optimally functioning nervous system.

Adjustments

Every chiropractic adjustment is...

…tailored to each patient.

When the 24 bones that protect the spinal cord lose their normal position or motion, delicate nerve tissue can become choked or irritated. If a thorough examination reveals malfunctioning areas of the spine, chiropractic adjustments are recommended to help correct this condition.

A chiropractic adjustment is the use of a specific force in a precise direction, applied to a joint that is fixated, “locked up”, or not moving properly. Adjustments help return the bones to a more normal position or motion, relieving pain and ill health.

There are hundreds of ways to adjust the spine.

Usually the doctor’s hands or a specially designed instrument delivers a brief and

adjustments.

Each day, millions of delighted patients choose chiropractic over drugs or surgery, as a common sense approach to better health.

highly accurate thrust. After years of training, each doctor has selected a variety of methods and become skilled in their delivery. Regardless of the technique used, each chiropractic adjustment is tailored to the patient’s age, size, and unique spinal problem.

Adjustments help normalize spinal function and avoid bone and soft tissue degeneration. When nervous system function improves in this way, the body can begin the natural healing process.

A continuing schedule of regular chiropractic checkups can help detect, correct, and maintain optimum spinal and nervous system function. Find out how chiropractic care, combined with proper diet, exercise, and other aspects of good health and personal hygiene can enhance your well-being and help you enjoy life to the fullest. Ask your Doctor of Chiropractic for a care program designed for your age, condition, and lifestyle.
